One of the most exciting (and confusing!) milestones in your baby’s first year is starting solids.
When is the right time? What should you give first? How do you know if your baby is ready?
If these questions are buzzing in your mind, you’re not alone. This detailed guide will walk you through when, what, and how to introduce solid foods to your little one — especially with an Indian parenting perspective.
When to Start Solid Food?
The World Health Organization (WHO) and Indian pediatricians recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months.
After that, babies are usually ready to start with semi-solid or mashed foods — but every baby is different.
Signs your baby is ready:
-
Can hold head up steadily
-
Sits with little or no support
-
Shows interest in food (watches you eat!)
-
Loss of tongue-thrust reflex (doesn’t push food out of the mouth)
How to Start: The First Feed
Start slow and simple.
Your baby’s digestive system is still learning, so begin with 1–2 spoons once a day. Gradually increase the quantity and variety.
✔️ First Week Plan:
-
Day 1–2: Rice water or dal ka paani (thin consistency)
-
Day 3–4: Mashed banana or stewed apple
-
Day 5–6: Moong dal khichdi (very soft, mashed)
-
Day 7: Mashed sweet potato
Foods to Avoid (Under 1 Year)
-
Honey (risk of botulism)
-
Whole nuts (choking hazard)
-
Salt & sugar (strain on kidneys)
-
Cow’s milk (before 12 months, except in cooking)
-
Deep-fried or spicy foods
-
Packaged or processed food (biscuits, chips etc.)
What About Water?
If your baby is still breastfeeding/formula-feeding well, small sips of boiled-cooled water can be introduced after 6 months. Don’t overdo it.
Tips for a Smooth Transition
-
Always feed in a high chair or baby seat — not while lying down.
-
Use baby-friendly utensils (soft-tip spoons, spill-proof bowls).
-
Offer variety but don’t force — babies may take time to accept new tastes.
-
Don’t expect full meals — even a few spoons is enough in the beginning.
-
Continue breastfeeding or formula feeding along with solids till at least 1 year.
Final Thoughts
Starting solids is a joyful (and messy!) adventure. Don’t worry if your baby eats very little in the beginning — the goal is to help them explore textures, flavors, and the act of eating.
Be patient. Celebrate small wins. And remember — you’re doing great.
